The Sport Berkey Portable Water Filter is the ideal personal protection traveling companion- featuring the IONIC ADSORPTION MICRO FILTRATION SYSTEM. The theory behind this innovation is simple. The bottle's filter is designed to remove and/or dramatically reduce a vast array of health-threatening contaminants from questionable sources of water, including remote lakes and streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries where regulations are often sub-standard.

    Ionic Adsorption Micro Filtration System

    This advanced technology was developed, refined, and proven through diligent, investigative research and testing performed by water purification specialists, researchers and engineers. The media within the filter element removes contaminants by a surface phenomenon known as "adsorption", which results from a molecular attraction of substances to the surfaces of the media.

    As the bottle is pressed, the source water is forced through the Filter. The quality and volume of media used determine the rate of adsorption. The flow rate or time of exposure through the Filter has been calculated to yield the greatest volume removal of toxic chemicals caused by pollution from industry and agriculture. This exclusive Filter element is impregnated with proprietary "absorbing" media that promotes IONIC "absorption" of pollutants within the micro-porous element, such as aluminum, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, and other dangerous heavy metals.

    The "Tortuous Path" structure of these pores gives the filter its unique characteristics. The Sport Berkey Portable Water Filter offers a convenient and portable filtration system using medical grade technology.

    Care and Use

    Fill the Sport Berkey Portable Water Filter with water, screw on the cap, and tighten securely to eliminate leaks. Flush water through Filter by pulling down lever, so that straw is exposed, and squeeze water through Filter and out of the straw. Repeat this flushing process twice before drinking. This removes excess process dust form the Filter. After two flushes, rinse the bottle and cap. Your Filter bottle is now ready for use. Enjoy!

    Maintenance and Storage

    The Sport Berkey Portable Water Filter has a shelf life of 50 years. When the filter system will not be used for an extended period, remove filter and flush the unit with a chlorinated solution of 1/4 tsp. per one half gallon of water. Then rinse and allow parts to dry thoroughly with cap removed. Re-assemble and seal in an air tight container if possible. Do not allow filter to freeze, do not place in microwave oven and do not run hot water through the filter.

    Generic Version

    The Generic/Non-Labeled Sport Berkey Portable Water Filter is identical in function to the Sport Berkey Portable Water Filter but is made without a label and is lower in price. It can also be custom labeled for specific organizations and events.

    How do I remove mold and mildew from the straw in the Sport Berkey?

    This can occur on occasion. Typically, it means that the top & the straw/drinking parts of the bottle are in need of a good soapy cleaning. Follow standard cleaning procedures which are on the instructions that come with each bottle. In some cases, it may be necessary to soak the top and straw parts for a bit before cleaning, or use a fine brush in the straw. Typically soaking in soapy water or vinegar water takes care of any build-up inside the top/straw. Rinse thoroughly. Again, it is important to periodically clean the bottle, top & straw parts to help keep this from occurring in the future.

    I am having difficulty drawing water out of the straw of my new Sport Berkey. Is something wrong?

    On occasion, the straw in the cap becomes pinched. Many times you can actually see where the straw has become stuck together internally. You can fix this very simply by doing the following:

  • Open the cap so the straw is sticking up.
  • Grasp the straw with your thumb and index finger, at the point where the straw exits the cap.
  • Gently pull the straw out slightly, while at the same time rotating the part of the straw that comes in contact with the cap, between your finger and thumb.

  • This should open the straw up, allowing you to use your new Sport Berkey.

    What is the plastic composition of the Sport Berkey components (bottle, cap & straw)?

    The Bottle is FDA LDPE, the Cap is FDA HDPE and the Straw is FDA PolyPro

    Can I filter boiling water through the Sport Berkey for making hot tea?

    Hot water can break down the element and compromise its efficiency, so we recommend that you first filter the source water through the Sport Berkey then afterward boil the filtered water for your tea.

    Do you make a fluoride reduction filter for the Sport Berkey?

    Unfortunately we do not make fluoride reduction filters for the Sport Berkey. Fluoride is very difficult to extract once it has been introduced into the water supply and it requires a large amount of media to remove just a small amount of fluoride. Currently, it would require that most of the room within the sport bottle be used for a fluoride filter leaving next to no room for the source water. Until a more powerful media is developed, it would be unfeasible for us to develop a fluoride reduction filter for the Sport Berkey. We do, however, make fluoride reduction filters for our larger systems because we have more room with which to work.
